Global social and environmental issues will increasingly become multiregional and multinational, and we therefore will need to plan in what should become one language. Part I of the book is about the necessary but sometimes difficult collaboration between designers and scientists, and also focuses on key aspects of study areas, scale, and size which influence how geodesign is organized and carried out. Part II presents Steinitz’s framework and addresses six key questions, and their related types of models, which must be integrated in geodesign. Part III features nine case studies that illustrate different ways of designing for change, while Part IV explores the future of geodesign in research, education, and practice. In an era marked by environmental challenges, from climate change to habitat loss, the importance of sustainable and environmentally-conscious design has never been more pronounced. Geographic design, with its inherent connection to the Earth’s landscapes, plays a pivotal role in promoting and embodying these principles.
Master of Applied Geospatial Information Systems and Technologies
Adam holds MS degrees in Historic Preservation and Urban Planning from Columbia University and a BA in Urban Studies from New College of Florida. Chi-Chia Hou took a break from school in the previous academic year to learn from his daughter and has now returned to school to learn from his brilliant cohorts. AUD's cohort of PhD candidates are leaders in their fields of study, deepening their scholarship at AUD and at UCLA while sharing their knowledge with the community. Applications for the MA/PhD program (Fall 2024 matriculation) are completed via the UCLA Application for Graduate Admission, and are due January 6, 2024. Candidates will be notified of decisions in March 2024; admitted candidates who wish to accept the offer of matriculation must submit their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) by April 15, 2024. Software installation instructions and support are provided within each course, and program advisors are happy to advise students about computer purchases or the suitability of their hardware.

Beyond the classroom, the program helped open up so many doors for me, allowing me to conduct research on Catalina Island, present at conferences like the Los Angeles Geospatial Summit and intern at Esri. Whether it was constructing elaborate forts as a child, singing in choirs, composing music, or designing treehouses, I’ve always found immense joy in the process of creating. This carried into my studies at USC, where I double-majored in Jazz Voice and Geodesign.
Students Create Their Own Countries With this Geography Design Project
This section delves into the hurdles that designers in this field often encounter and the strategies to overcome them. We have introduced a staff wellbeing committee (SMILE), introduced fresh fruit Wednesdays and provide free milk, tea and coffee daily as well as a healthy free lunch. Additionally, we offer all staff from day one, an opportunity to apply for flexible working and dependant on the role, staff are able to work from home for 20% of the working week.
Each explorer is given a special Earth Expedition booklet to record their findings from their voyage. Students will be provided with no-cost access to all required GIS software while enrolled in the certificate program. Any proprietary software provided within the scope of this program may not be used for any non-academic purposes. This includes 21 quarter credit hours priced at $450/credit and a $200 certificate candidacy fees.

So geodesign imagines cities by incorporating the environment, distant populations, and future generations. Instead of considering what’s best, it considers what’s best down the road. But by putting people’s needs as a top priority, it doesn’t look at the consequences of actions.

Geographic design melds the intricacies of geography with the principles of design. It’s more than just placing elements on a map; it’s about capturing the essence of places and their relationships with people. This blend ensures designs are not only visually appealing but also contextually relevant.
Drawing on theory and practice from cultural geography and graphic design, work of a geo/graphic nature offers the reader an individual, interactive and multisensory experience that reflects contemporary geographic conceptualisations of place. Students will begin their journey as global citizens at home by creating a publication (such as a brochure, pamphlet or web page) highlighting basic geographic features of their own region or state. In this introductory assignment students will consider lay-out, space, fonts/typography, and basic principles of design. This will also serve as an introduction to the basic features of industry standard print or web design software. These programs are for professionals who realize the limitations in current design and planning processes, and seek new skills to effectively address complex environmental design problems for situations ranging from urban design to conservation planning. Steinitz’s framework, described here in detail, can contribute to that goal.
Middle School
GIS is best at understanding spatial patterns and constructing qualitative solutions. This holistic approach to geodesign can help us prolong our ability to sustain ourselves and build resilient communities. The design process is what shapes our world by addressing the needs of people. Geodesign is an up-and-coming field of study that combines geography with design (hence the term “Geodesign”. As of this Fall 2023 cycle, the GRE is NOT required as part of your application to UCLA AUD. No preference will be given to those who choose to submit GRE scores as part of their application.
Dexter Walcott is a registered architect currently in his fifth year with the Critical Studies of Architecture program at UCLA. His research focuses on the Latrobe family and early nineteenth century builders in the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys. He is interested in the role of the built environment in histories of labor, capitalism, steam-power, and industry. His research locates moments of theorizing methodologies to manage income-generating properties in schools of agriculture, home economics, and hotel studies. The schools taught their students theories, while instilling the imminence of faithful direction of oneself, of self-as-property. The pedagogies, existing beyond the purview of Architecture, were of immense architectural consideration.
I am so grateful for my time as a Geodesign student and all of the personal connections and professional opportunities it gave to me. While at the Spatial Sciences Institute, I met an array of amazing people who not only became great friends but also an invaluable part of my professional network. Members of the various disciplines and practices relevant to geodesign have held defining discussions at a workshop on Spatial Concepts in GIS and Design in December 2008 and the GeoDesign Summit in January 2010.
